Root Method on Jellybean
[B][U][SIZE=6]NOTE: if on VRBMB1 or newer please refer here for updated files:[\SIZE][\U][\B] http://rootzwiki.com/topic/29256-tut...-galaxy-s-iii/
Credits to Invisiblek at Rootzwiki for the method/files/etc and being all around awesomesauce! Seriously, give him some thanks HERE. I am pretty much copy/pasting his instructions as they are super clear.
Windows: (This may also work for Mac and Linux, substitute Odin for Heimdall)
Downloads (I know it looks like a lot of files, but they are relatively small. Just don't rename any of them)
1. Root.zip: Download
2. Samsung SGS3 Drivers: Download
3. Odin 3.0.7: Download
4. VRALEC bootchain: Download
5. VRALF2 kernel: Download (downloads as stock.kernel.tar)
6. Recovery (choose one): TWRP 2.2.2.1 (unofficial): Download or CWM 6 Touch: Download
7. VRALF2 bootchain: Download
8. VRALE6 bootloader: Download
Instructions
1. Copy Root.zip and VRALE6.bootloader.zip to your sdcard, for use later. (downloads 1 and 8) Also copy the stock kernel to your SD if you intend on staying on stock rooted (refer to Note 3 at the bottom of the post)
2. Install the Samsung drivers (download 2)
3. Boot into Odin mode on your device. (Power off the device, hold Vol- Home and Power until you get the warning message, then press Vol+)
4. Flash VRALEC.bootchain.tar.md5 (download 4) via odin (download 3) in the PDA slot. Your phone will reboot.
5. Flash VRALF2 kernel (stock.kernel.tar) (download 5) via odin (same as previous step, just use the file from download 5)
6. Boot back into Odin mode and flash a custom recovery (download 6) (also in the PDA slot) such as cwm touch or twrp:
7. Flash back to the VRALF2 bootchain (download 7) via odin (same as step 4)
8. Boot into your new recovery mode by turning off your device and holding Vol+, Home and Power
9. Flash root.zip and VRALE6.bootloader.zip from step 1 in recovery mode
10. Profit!
Note: This does increment the flash counter. If you want to go back to stock you will need to use Triangle Away to clear it!
Note 2: Between many of these steps it will not boot fully into the phone for various reasons, such as attempting to boot an ICS kernel on a JB system... don't panic! After ODIN auto-reboots the phone just pull the battery when it goes to a black screen, boot back into Download mode, and continue the process!
Note 3: If you intend on staying on stock rooted, you will need to flash the stock kernel in recovery after you finish everything else up to get it booting. Download is below:

All info below is ICS ONLY!
Rooting
Files needed:
Windows - Debugfs root.
Goo.im Downloads - Downloading Root Debug FS.7z
Mac/Linux - Casual Program (will also perform bootloader unlock)
Dev-Host - Verizon-GS3-CASUAL-Revision131a.jar - The Ultimate Free File Hosting / File Sharing Service
Windows:
1. ) Install the USB drivers: http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/co...r_v1_4_6_0.exe
2. ) Extract the Debugfs root package from the .7z. You will need 7zip or similar compression/decompression util. (Google it if you need to, its free and open-source)
3. ) On the S3, enable installation of third party apps and USB debugging (Settings -> Security -> Unknown Sources for third-party apps and Settings -> Developer Options -> USB Debugging for USB Debugging)
4. ) On the PC, make sure you don't have any other Android-related services running (emulators, other devices connected, PDANet or similar services... etc.)
5. ) Plug phone into PC with USB that is directly connected to PC (not on a hub)
6. ) Double-click RootDebugfs.bat and follow instructions on-screen. Your phone will reboot a few times during the process. Try to avoid switching to other applications while its running for safety reasons.
7. ) Done! Move to flashing custom recovery and bootloader unlocking.
Mac/Linux:
1. ) Open the file (its an executable java .jar)
2. ) On the S3, enable installation of third party apps and USB debugging (Settings -> Security -> Unknown Sources for third-party apps and Settings -> Developer Options -> USB Debugging for USB Debugging)
3. ) On the PC, make sure you don't have any other Android-related services running (emulators, other devices connected, PDANet or similar services... etc.)
4. ) Plug phone into PC with USB that is directly connected to PC (not on a hub)
5. ) Select the drop-down, select Root with DebugFSRoot.
6. ) Click Do it.
7. ) Done! Move to flashing custom recovery and bootloader unlocking.
Flashing Custom Recovery:
There's quite a few methods to do this, from running commands in Terminal, to a few PC / Mac / Linux apps, to a phone app. We'll stick with the path of least resistance, but know you may find multiple options elsewhere.
Note: The Casual program used above to root on Mac/Linux has EVERYTHING needed to do a complete root / recovery flash / bootloader unlock. You can use it if you want, however keep in mind the recovery that is flashed is an older version of CWM, so you may desire to upgrade it anyways.
Easiest way to flash a custom Recovery (CWM, TWRP, etc)
Download the EZ-Recovery app from Google Play:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...=com.mmmeff.ez
1. ) Install application
2. ) Select recovery of choice
3. ) Hit Flash!
4. ) Grant Superuser
5. ) Done.
Its that easy. Keep in mind the app also has an option for "Other" so if you want to use a different recovery (designed for our phone of course) you can download the recovery.img file and point it to it and flash it with this program as well.
Unlocking Bootloader:
Like Recovery flashing, you will find multiple methods of this spread throughout the interwebs. And, as noted above for Mac/Linux users the Casual method can do it as well. This isn't outdated (we only have one insecure aboot) so if you want to use the Casual program, go for it. Otherwise, read below. We will follow the path of least resistance like Recovery flashing.
Download the EZ-Unlock app from Rootzwiki (Get Version 1.2):
[App] [9/20] EZ-Unlock 1.4 - Easiest way to unlock your bootloader! - Verizon Galaxy S III Development - RootzWiki
1. ) Install Application
2. ) Hit the unlock
3. ) Grant Superuser
4. ) Done.
Its that easy. And you're now free to play. You're rooted, with custom recovery installed and the bootloader unlocked. I will add a "back to stock" section to this guide in a little while.
